Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. The first role she had was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She had her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring part on the ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred as a guest on independent films and TV shows. Donna Abandando was her first large role on ABC's crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the team between 1993 and the year 1996. Her nomination was in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series along with the cast.
